In the
summer of 2002, Dr. Taavoni founded North Carolina's first medical
practice dedicated exclusively to making housecalls. Since that time,
she has been the focus of many newspaper articles, TV news programs,
and a 45 minute radio interview on NPR. Dr. Taavoni continues
to
provide direct patient care, as well as the medical leadership for
Doctors Making Housecalls, her rapidly growing practice of six
physicians specializing in the care of complex patients.
Dr. Taavoni believes
that seeing patients in their home or office will become a compelling
community service. "We can dramatically improve access to care
and quality of care for many individuals, from overworked
businesspeople, to complex geriatric patient , and busy women pulled in
all directions," says Dr.
Taavoni, herself a mother of two young children. "We love taking care
of people who would not get the attention they need if our
service were not available." "We
are proud of the fact that we provide comprehensive care for both acute
and chronic problems," she goes on to say.
"In fact, we specialize in the care of complex patients. We
provide
the same range of services that
specialists in adult medicine or geriatrics provide in their office. We
believe we actually provide better care because our style of practice
encourages
physicians to take their time and really get to
know
patients as people, and because we're better able to integrate family
members and other caregivers
into the treatment team. It's much easier to achieve that
when
you
see
patients in their own environment."
